Following the rape and killing of a 31-year-old trainee physician at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month, the demonstrators demanded that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee resign.
The state head of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said that Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) government was disregarding the people’s demands for justice in the issue, and that’s why the bandh was a necessary response.
Suvendu Adhikari, the opposition leader in Bengal, also denounced the police for what he said was an overzealous use of force against a peaceful student march.
Demonstrators tried to get to Nabanna to demand the Chief Minister’s resignation, but the police met them with water cannons, tear gas, and batons.
Suvendu Adhikari made a threat that the BJP will “bring the entire state to a halt” with the same policies ahead of the scheduled bandh.
To offer legal support to individuals detained during the Nabanna demonstration, the BJP has also established a helpline.
The BJP was accused by the ruling Trinamool Congress of using the unfortunate event to stir up trouble in the state. The TMC leader, Kunal Ghosh, asserted that the BJP had supported Tuesday’s ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ student protests from the beginning and that the bandh call demonstrated the party’s intention to incite unrest.
He was sure that the people of West Bengal would reject the “game plan” of the BJP and make sure that everything carried on as usual.
Concurrently, the state government said that it would take all required steps to guarantee that the bandh does not cause any disturbance to day-to-day activities. Residents were asked not to take part in the strike by Alapan Bandopadhyay, Mamata Banerjee’s chief advisor.
He stated that stores, marketplaces, and other commercial businesses have been told to stay open, and that transportation services would continue to run. It has also been recommended that state government personnel report to work as usual.
