Cyclone Remal: rain and landslips wreak devastation in the northeast, killing 31 people

With 27 fatalities from four landslide occurrences, Mizoram was the most hit; portions of Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram are still without power.

On Tuesday, in three northeastern states, landslides and storms linked to typhoon Remal left at least 31 people dead and numerous others injured.

Mizoram suffered the most, with four landslide occurrences resulting in 27 verified deaths. Authorities in the state stated that the death toll might exceed thirty because there have been reports of an “uncertain number” of missing persons, some of whom were buried beneath debris.

Guwahati: Cyclone Remal caused heavy rains and landslides in four northeastern states on Tuesday, resulting in at least 36 fatalities. The storm also severely disrupted regular life in all eight states in the region, with road and rail connections severely damaged, according to officials.
Four deaths were reported in Nagaland, three in Assam, and two in Meghalaya, while 27 people were killed in Mizoram, including 21 in a quarry collapse in the Aizawl region.

Along with strong gusts, the rains caused landslides, uprooted trees and electricity poles, and interrupted internet and power supplies.

Many trains were either cancelled or partially cancelled due to waterlogging between the New Haflong-Jatinga Lampur segment and Ditokcherra yard under the Lumding division of Northeast Frontier Railway.

At least 27 people were murdered in numerous landslides in the Aizawl region of Mizoram, including 21 people who perished in a collapsed stone quarry. Ten more people were reported missing.

Authorities in charge of disaster management and law enforcement reported that 21 bodies had been found so far at the quarry site in the Aizawl between Melthum and Hlimen and that a number of others were still buried beneath the rubble after the structure collapsed early in the morning. Following landslide incidents at Salem, Aibawk, Lungsei, Kelsih, and Falkawn in the district, six people perished and numerous others were reported missing.

Over forty houses have been damaged in different parts of Nagaland, and at least four people have perished in various instances.

According to an official, two other drowning occurrences were recorded from Doyang Dam in the Wokha district, and a small boy drowned at a river close to Laruri hamlet under the Meluri subdivision of Phek district. In Phek, a wall fell, crushing an elderly man to death.

In Assam, the districts of Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), and Morigaon saw three fatalities and seventeen injuries. Twelve pupils were hurt when a tree branch in the Sonitpur district’s Dhekiajuli fell on a school bus, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). In other instances in Morigaon, five more people sustained injuries.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister, expressed sorrow over the deaths.

The districts of Bongaigaon, Chirang, Darrang, Dhubri, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, Karbi Anglong, Kokrajhar, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sonitpur, South Salmara, and West Karbi Anglong were affected by strong storms, according to ASDMA officials.

Authorities in Meghalaya said on Tuesday that two people had died and over 100 more had been hurt as a result of the state’s intense downpour. Two deaths were recorded, one in an automobile accident in the East Khasi Hills district and one from East Jaintia Hills, according to officials. Numerous homes in 17 communities sustained damage as a result of the unrelenting downpour. There were reports of landslides on the Bivar Road in Oakland and the Shillong-Mawlai Bypass, and flash floods in the districts of Langkyrding, Pynthorbah, Polo, Sawfurlong, and Demseiniong.

Over the course of the last 24 hours, Tripura has seen intense rain and wind gusts of 50 to 60 km/h, causing damage to 470 dwellings and compelling 750 people to seek refuge in 15 relief camps located across various districts.

Cyclone Remal: Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushant Chowdhury briefed the media in Agartala, stating that the state had received 215.5 mm of rain on average during the previous day, with Unakoti district receiving the most at 252.4 mm.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a high alert for Arunachal Pradesh due to the expected exceptionally heavy rains. Chief Minister Pema Khandu asked everyone to exercise extreme caution and stay away from isolated and vulnerable areas.
